DENVER - Today, Governor Polis, the current vice chair of the National Governors Association (NGA), Governor Mike Dunleavy, Governor Gavin Newsom, Governor Josh Green, Governor Kathy Hochul, and Governor Mike DeWine sent a letter to Secretary Kendall urging for the creation of the space national guard. The governors are urging the federal government to create the Space National Guard following the Office of Management and Budgets policy position opposing the creation.
“Establishing a Space National Guard helps ensure our national security in the space domain. It also affirms the importance of the National Guard continuing to carry out federal missions, concurrently providing states and territories with the skilled service members needed to respond to emergencies and guarantee the safety of our communities. We strongly encourage you to support the establishment of a Space National Guard, validating the central role that the National Guard plays in federal missions,” the governors wrote.
“In addition, space-based capabilities are foundational to the modern American way of life and are central to our national security and homeland defense. Failing to establish a Space National Guard directly threatens our national security in the space domain,” the letter from the governors continued.
