Governor Polis Provides Update on COVID-19 Pandemic

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

DENVER - Today, Governor Jared Polis provided an update on the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With more Coloradans vaccinated, the state is seeing a 93-95% reduction in reported positive COVID-19 cases among vaccinated people compared to non-vaccinated people. More than 65.2% of Colorado’s most vulnerable population, those aged 60 and older, are now fully vaccinated. The vaccination of this vulnerable population plays a critical role in reducing hospitalizations and deaths related to COVID as those over the age of 60 are more likely to experience more severe cases of COVID.

“The vaccines are working extremely well, exactly as advertised and the data is clear. By getting the vaccine, you aren’t only protecting yourself, but also the people you love and your entire community. The COVID-19 vaccine is 93-95% effective in Colorado and a triumph of modern science, ranking among the most effective vaccines out there,” said Governor Polis. “If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, take the opportunity now and sign up to receive a vaccine at a location near you. It’s free, quick, and easy.”

Colorado is seeing an increase in hospitalizations of younger Coloradans, particularly among those in their 20’s and 30’s. Coloradans who are not yet fully vaccinated should continue to be cautious and practice social distancing, wearing masks and staying six feet apart from others. Governor Polis reminded Coloradans that everyone aged 16 and up is eligible for the vaccine. There are enough doses of the vaccine in the state for everyone in Colorado who wants one to get one.

Dr. Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist, joined Governor Polis today to provide an overview of breakthrough cases in which people who received the COVID-19 vaccine still contracted the virus. In total, the state of Colorado has reported 819 breakthrough cases out of 106,965 total cases from the end of January through April 19th, which represents a very small percentage of cases.

“While there are incidents of breakthrough cases occurring in Colorado, these cases represent a very small portion of positive  COVID-19 cases and are no more than expected based on known vaccine efficacy levels. Vaccination is our ticket out of this pandemic,” said Dr. Rachel Herlihy.

Governor Polis also announced that three community vaccination sites throughout the state will now accept walk-ins and individuals will no longer need an appointment in advance to get the vaccine.  These sites are:

  • Pueblo County: Colorado State Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Sunday

  • Larimer County: The Ranch from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday

  • Denver County: Ball Arena from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday
