DENVER - Colorado Governor Jared Polis and William Wei former Colorado State Historian & senior Asianist of the CU-Boulder History Department condemned the arrest and detainment of Roman Catholic Cardinal Joseph Zen by authorities in Hong Kong, China.
“The arrest of 90-year old Cardinal Zen by Chinese authorities is an attack on human rights. Attacks on free speech and blatant authoritarianism must be rejected in all forms. I am deeply troubled by the arrest of Cardinal Zen by Chinese authorities in Hong Kong and call for his immediate release,” said Governor Polis.
“The arrest of Cardinal Joseph Zen is the latest violation of human rights carried out by the Chinese government. Though the authorities think that arresting anyone and everyone they deem a threat will suppress the quest for freedom and democracy in Hong Kong, they are wrong. The spirit of freedom and democracy will eventually prevail,” said William Wei, former Colorado State Historian & senior Asianist of the CU-Boulder History Department.
