This will allow Venezuelan to apply for Employment Authorization Documents
DENVER - Colorado Governor Jared Polis applauded the Biden Administration and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for taking action on temporary protected status (TPS) for Venezuelan migrants. Governor Polis has previously called for this action. Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas today announced the extension and redesignation of Venezuela for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, due to extraordinary and temporary conditions in Venezuela that prevent individuals from safely returning.
“I am thrilled the Biden administration and Secretary Mayorkas are granting temporary protected status for Venezuelan migrants fleeing violence and oppression in search of a better life in America and who can now help contribute to our economy and fill much-needed jobs,” said Governor Jared Polis. “Our new arrivals are ready to work and pay their own way, and now they will be able to. Providing temporary protected status and securing the border requires problem-solving and collaboration between cities, states, and the federal government, not simply politics as usual. Colorado welcomes this action as immigrants and refugees enrich our communities, strengthen our economy, and help ensure we have a Colorado for All.”
Governor Polis met with DHS Secretary Mayorkas this summer to call on the federal government to provide TPS for migrants.
Governor Polis has urged the federal government to secure the border, provide Temporary Protected Status (TPS) work authorization permits for jobs, take action on immigration reform, and provide financial resources to non-border states to address this challenge and treat individuals and families fleeing oppression with dignity and respect.
This summer, Governor Polis swore in new citizens this summer on Colorado’s 147th birthday. In 2019, Governor Polis established the Colorado Office of New Americans to ensure immigrants and refugees can thrive in Colorado.
